Old pipes vs. bottled water

Hey Mr. Green,I really don't want to drink bottled water, because tap water is cheaper and better for the environment. But my house was built in 1940, and the plumbing is of that same vintage. Our local water was tested and found to be safe, but I'm worried that the water from my own pipes may be contaminated with lead. Should I continue to use bottled water?--Eloise in Manhattan Beach, California

New Mexico Makes Strides on Emissions

As international delegates continue to discuss climate change in Cancun this week, one US state has taken matters into its own hands. On December 6th, New Mexico's Environmental Improvement Board voted to adopt a plan in which businesses that produce over 25,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide annually will reduce emissions 3 percent per year starting in 2012. The ambitious plan sets a goal for the state to bring its emission levels 25% below carbon rates in 1990.

Quit Oil

While scrolling through our 2010 archives for the heck of it, I was amazed that it's already been more than six months since those heartbreaking images of the BP oil disaster emerged. Remember that feeling of helplessness? Remember those empty reassurances BP kept giving that they were handling the situation. We all sat idle and watched as gallons upon gallons of oil filled the Gulf. There was, and still is, nothing we could've done -- right? Right???

This Wednesday is the Air Force's "Renewable Energy Industry Day"

This Wednesday, the U.S. Air Force is hosting Renewable Energy Industry Day in Irving, Texas. The event is an effort to strengthen connections between the military and civilian green-energy industries. Attendees will include experts in solar, wind, and geothermal power, who'll participate in focus groups with military officers. Also attending will be Major General Timothy A. Beyers, the Air Force's top civil engineer; he oversees operations for bases around the world.

Glowing Report Card for Offshore Wind

Of the 212 gigawatts of wind power potential off the Atlantic coast, wind projects harnessing 6 gigawatts have been proposed or are advancing through the permitting process, according to the report. Those proposed projects would generate the equivalent of up to a half dozen coal-fired plants, enough to supply the needs of about 1.5 million homes annually.
